Nails peeling from cuticle to tip?

I noticed on my index finger that the nail literally separated from my finger at the base and is peeling forward from the cuticle. It has happened before but stopped until now. Has anyone else out there had this happen? I can't find anything online. It only peels forward so far then stops and reveals very sensitive flesh underneath!
