Why can you physically feel your heart sink?

When I get sad (hope shattered) I can actually feel my heart sink down into my chest. Why is that this reaction happens after dealing with something sad? I've always thought a heart is just an organ, but when dealing with something that is emotionally depressing i can physically feel it sink deep down. Is there any scientific reasoning to this? Can the heart literally feel emotions?
